This is a simple warm detox drink I started making everyday and now swear by.
Every morning, before coffee, before breakfast and before the day begins, I give my body something intentional. A warm, spice infused drink that gently wakes up digestion, supports metabolism and sets the tone for the rest of the day.
This is not an ancient Ayurvedic formulation taken from any scripture. It is just something I started making by combining ingredients found commonly in most kitchens.
Initially, it was just warm water with turmeric and dry ginger. Over time, my husband suggested adding digestive seeds like cumin, coriander or carrom to enhance the benefits. I experimented, and eventually found this version worked even better and tasted so good.
It’s become our daily ritual now as part of our slow mornings. Every sip feels like calm. Anyone who has stayed over at our place has been served this, first thing in the morning. And every time, I’ve been asked for the recipe. So I finally thought of giving this drink a permanent place on my blog.
The Recipe
INGREDIENTS (Makes for 1 person)
• 1 glass water
• Any ONE of these seeds: Approx. 1 tbsp coriander seeds / 1 tbsp cumin seeds / 2 tsp carrom seeds
• 1/4 tsp dry ginger powder or fresh ginger paste
• 1/2 tsp turmeric powder or fresh turmeric paste
• A pinch of black pepper powder
• 1/4 tsp black salt or rock salt
• Regular salt to taste
• Juice of half a slice of lime
Method
- Pour around a glass of water into a saucepan.
- Add your chosen seeds.
- Add ginger, turmeric, black pepper, black salt and regular salt.
- Turn on the flame and bring it to a boil.
- Reduce the flame to a medium-low and let it simmer until the water level reduces to half. The colour will turn a deep brown and all the ingredients will look fully infused.
- Switch off the flame and add a little room temperature water to slightly cool it.
- Squeeze fresh lime juice.
- Mix well and strain using a small cup sized steel strainer.
- Let it sit for a few minutes and sip slowly while it is still warm.
Drink this on an empty stomach.

Why These Ingredients Work
Each ingredient plays a functional role.
Coriander Seeds: Cooling and digestive in nature. They help reduce bloating and may support blood sugar balance.
Cumin Seeds: Stimulate digestive enzymes and improve gut function. Especially helpful for sluggish digestion.
Carrom Seeds: Known for reducing heaviness, gas and bloating. They support metabolism and gut comfort.
Dry Ginger Powder or Fresh Ginger: Warming and metabolism boosting. Supports circulation and reduces inflammation.
Turmeric: Rich in curcumin, a powerful anti inflammatory compound that supports immunity and liver health.
Black Pepper: Enhances the absorption of curcumin from turmeric and stimulates digestion.
Black Salt or Rock Salt: Provide trace minerals and support digestive enzyme activation when used moderately.
Lime Juice: Adds vitamin C and supports liver function while enhancing taste and nutrient absorption.
Long Term Benefits of Consistency
When consumed regularly, this drink may support:
• Supports smoother and more efficient digestion• Helps reduce bloating and digestive discomfort• Encourages a healthier metabolic rhythm• Contributes to stronger immune resilience• Assists in managing everyday inflammation• Promotes steadier morning energy levels• Complements sustainable weight management efforts
Because it is warm and consumed first thing in the morning, it gently activates the digestive system instead of shocking it. Small daily habits create long term shifts.
Can You Drink This During Intermittent Fasting? This depends on your goal.
If Your Goal Is Weight Loss and Metabolic Health: This drink contains minimal calories. There is no sugar or sweetener. In small quantities, the spices and lime are unlikely to create a significant insulin spike. If you are fasting for fat loss, digestion or metabolic improvement, then this drink can generally fit into your fasting window without meaningfully disrupting progress. Many people even find that warm spiced water reduces cravings later in the day. It helps me stay full until my first meal.
If Your Goal Is Strict Autophagy: If you are fasting specifically for deep cellular repair and longevity, a stricter approach may be preferred. Even small amounts of lime or spices may stimulate digestion and technically break a clean fast. In this case, plain water, black coffee or unsweetened green tea would be more appropriate during the fasting window. You can instead have this drink at the start of your eating window.
A Practical Approach: If you want the benefits of both intermittent fasting and this morning ritual, you can:
• Drink this at the beginning of your eating window.
• Or adjust your fasting timing slightly so this drink becomes part of your first intake.
Consistency matters more than perfection.
A Gentle Disclaimer
If you are pregnant, on medication or managing a medical condition, you may want to consult your healthcare provider before making this a daily ritual. Monitor how your body responds. Every body is different. What works beautifully for one person may need small adjustments for another. So please be aware of all the ingredients listed, as not all may suit every individual. Listen to your body first. Adjust quantities if needed. Consistency matters more than intensity.
This drink is not about trends.
It is about discipline.
It is about starting your morning with intention.
Sometimes wellness is not complicated. It is just warm water, simple spices and a promise to take care of yourself every day. 🌿
