A Parent’s Plea: Help Us Save Our Baby
Imagine watching your baby struggle to move, breathe or even lift their tiny arms—knowing that each passing day brings irreversible damage. This is the heartbreaking reality for baby Ridhay and his family.
Ridhay is the son of my close college friend, and I personally know this wonderful family. They reside in Vasai, where Ridhay is cared for by his loving parents and grandparents, who are doing everything they can to save his life.
At just 5 months old, he has been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA1)—a rare and fatal genetic disorder that progressively destroys motor neurons, limiting movement and threatening vital organs. Without immediate intervention, SMA1 can become fatal by the time he turns 2 years old.
But there is hope—a revolutionary gene therapy called Zolgensma that can give him a fighting chance at life. The challenge? This life-saving treatment comes with a staggering cost of ₹9 Crore INR (~$1.1 Million USD). The sooner Ridhay receives this one-time infusion, the better his chances of survival and leading a normal life.

What is Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA1)?
SMA1 is a genetic disorder that affects approximately 1 in 10,000 children worldwide. It is caused by a missing or defective SMN1 gene, which is essential for motor neuron survival. Without treatment, muscle weakness progresses rapidly, leading to difficulty swallowing, breathing failure, and eventually, loss of life.
Symptoms of SMA1 Include:
- Weak muscle movement
- Difficulty holding up the head
- Loss of ability to move limbs
- Respiratory complications requiring BiPAP support
- Difficulty swallowing and feeding
Time is crucial because motor neuron damage is irreversible. Once lost, it cannot be recovered—which is why early treatment is critical.
Why is Zolgensma the Best Hope?
Unlike traditional treatments that only manage symptoms, Zolgensma addresses the root cause of SMA1 by replacing the missing SMN1 gene with a functional copy. This one-time infusion can halt disease progression, giving Ridhay the best chance at a normal life.
